A group of strangers had come, asking to buy the land from the tribe in return for a large sum of money, but the tribe's chieftain refused the offer. In the night, the strangers burned down the village and massacred Scottie's tribe. His legs were mangled beyond repair, and he suffered many burns, but one of the strangers took pity on him and rushed him to the hospital. He is not sure if any of his family survived, and chooses not to think too hard about it. Scottie's legs had to be amputated, confining him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Once he recovered from the surgery and the burns, he was put into foster care, and adopted by a family a few years later.
